The Manuscript

Chapter One

The manuscript arrived on a Tuesday, wrapped in brown paper and tied with string, as if it had travelled from another century. Mara set it on the kitchen table and did not open it at once. She made coffee, fed the cat, and watched the parcel the way one watches a sleeping animal that might, at any moment, wake.

She had read hundreds of first pages, and she knew how quickly a book reveals itself: in the rhythm of a sentence, in the confidence of its silences, in the way a writer trusts the reader to keep up. Most manuscripts announced themselves too loudly. A few whispered. Only a handful ever simply began.

When at last she untied the string, the first line was so plain that she laughed aloud, and then she read it again, slowly, because it was exactly right. Outside, the rain had started, steady and patient, tapping at the glass like someone who knew they would be let in eventually.

By noon she had read forty pages without looking up. The coffee had gone cold. The cat had given up on her and gone to sleep on the radiator. Somewhere in the second chapter, without quite noticing, she had stopped reading as an editor and started reading as a reader — which was, she thought, the only review that had ever really mattered.

She reached for a pencil, then put it down again. There would be time for notes later. For now, there was only the next page, and the one after that.
