Cover art · birds
A floral fantasy of animals and birds (Waq-waq)
Unknown artist, early 1600s.

Using it on a cover
The print file prints up to 7.9 x 11.3 in at 300 ppi — enough for a full 6 x 9 in front cover. Wider than a 6 x 9 cover: crop about 6% of the width, or use it as a wraparound across back and spine.
About the work
A magical plant simultaneously brings forth and eats animal life in multiple forms. Playfully rendered, real and mythic creatures ripen on the vine. All stems issue from the elephant, who is about to eat the main branch, while he, in turn, emerges from one that is about to be cut by the teeth of an ibex at the lower right. This painting would have beguiled courtly connoisseurs who enjoyed discovering visual puns in a royal album.
